KRISTEN LEAR
CONSERVATIONIST AND SCIENCE COMMUNICATOR
Once there was a girl whose Girl Scout project changed her life. When she was 12, Kristen learned how to design and build big rectangular boxes to hang on trees. These simple wooden boxes are homes for bats! Some people think bats are spooky. But Kristen knows the truth. Bats are pollinators. They help new flowers grow, and they eats tons and tons of mosquitoes.
Kristenâs favorite kind of bats, long-nosed bats, eat the nectar of a spiky plant called agave. When she started studying long-nosed bats, Kristen discovered that there isnât always enough food on their migration route between Texas and Mexico. So she decided to ask farmers who lived along the batsâ long flight path if she could help them plant agave.
The first time she knocked on a strangerâs door, Kristen thought, What if they laugh at me? What if they donât care about bats? Still, Kristen wiped her sweaty palms on her pants, took a deep breath, and tapped on that door in sunny south Texas.
To her delight, Kristen found that lots of farmers were willing to help! Whenever someone agrees to plant agave, Kristen makes sure to work alongside them to find areas with enough room for the plantâs 15-foot-tall flowers to thrive. Then itâs time to dig a giant hole. When the two are done giving the agave a new home, theyâre sweaty and dusty, but Kristen always feels happy to have provided dinner for her favorite bats.
Sometimes, a farmer will even agree to have a bat box installed. Whenever that happens, Kristen comes prepared with the skills she learned for her Girl Scout project so long ago.
